Can you Guess the Word? Part One
We’re six weeks into our new ‘Guess the Word’ campaign here at Oxford Dictionaries, and it’s time to take a look back at the videos that have kept you guessing!
Each of the video definitions below illustrate the meaning of one useful, commonplace word. Simply watch a video and see if you can guess which word the scenario describes. To check your answer, follow the link beneath the video to the word’s dictionary entry page, where lexicographer extraordinaire Susie Dent will guide you through each of the examples in the supplementary definition video.
Let’s begin with an easy one…
Got it? Check your answer!
Did you spot both meanings? Find out if you got it right!
This one was more tricky! Watch the explanatory video here.
Think you’ve quacked it? Check out the word’s entry page.
Made your guess, yes? But have you guessed correctly?
Last but by no means least, the humble ‘smoking nun’? No? Better watch the answer video then.
The ‘Guess the Word’ campaign is designed with English learners in mind, and aims to make those familiar words with unfamiliar definitions more easily understood by all. For more information on the campaign, visit the ‘Guess the Word’ homepage.
