Video: why do we call unwanted email ‘spam’?
We all know – and probably hate – spam emails.
This variety of spam means ‘irrelevant or unsolicited messages sent over the Internet, typically to a large number of users, for the purposes of advertising, phishing, spreading malware, etc.’ or ‘unwanted or intrusive advertising on the Internet’. But what is the origin of the word spam, and why was it chosen for this modern nuisance? Our video explains the unlikely connection with British comedy group Monty Python.
