Video: what is the origin of the word ‘vape’?
It is now two months since Oxford Dictionaries announced ‘vape’ as its word of the year 2014. At the time of choosing, the earliest example editors had found (in the form vaping) was in an article, “Why do People Smoke” in New Society in 1983. The author, Rob Stepney, described a hypothetical device being explored at the time. Further evidence about the word’s origins has subsequently come to light, as we will explore on OxfordWords soon.
We spoke to Rob Stepney and asked him his thoughts and recollections about the word, as one of the people involved in the whole vaping phenomenon all those years ago.
