Animal phobias, from apiphobia to musophobia
One of the most popular posts on OxfordWords is our list of phobias. It’s useful for several reasons – either to get the right name for a common phobia (acrophobia meaning a fear of heights, for example), to discover some unusual phobias (nephophobia for a fear of clouds, anyone?), or to check your spelling.
One of the most common categories for fears is animals. Some of these are well-known, like arachnophobia being a fear of spiders. Others are fairly common, like a fear of dogs, but you might not know the correct word – cynophobia. And then there’s zoophobia – a phobia of all animals – which must make life even trickier than a fear of clouds would.
We’ve grouped together the different names for some of the animal phobias to be found in the Oxford English Dictionary and Oxford Dictionaries Online – see which you knew, which are new to you, and which might make you cancel an upcoming trip to the zoo.
