Walking around in your leopard-print onesie while proudly sporting guyliner may lead to some guffaws and eye-rolling among family and friends, but whatevs! You know you’re totes on trend.
The above sentence contains just some of the new words and terms added to Oxford Dictionaries Online in our latest update which covers a whole range of topics, from the environment (green technology, eco-driving, water footprint) to sport (scudetto, Bundesliga) and even British science-fiction television programmes (Whovian). Whether you’re an infomaniac or a just a good old word lover, we’re sure you’ll find something to interest you.
Politics plays a role in our latest update with swift-boat and purple state both making an appearance on our free dictionary site. And the World Wide Web and computing continue to influence our ever-evolving language, which should make the alpha geeks amongst us happy. Both ransomware and abandonware have entered the dictionary, as well as a gaggle of ‘geo’ terms, from geodata to geoinformation.
We’ve also added some of the newest words and terms from the world of finance and banking, including Robin Hood tax, debt ceiling, SIFI, and sovereign debt. And we’ve had the literati, the glitterati, and even the Twitterati: now it’s time for the illiterati to enter our dictionary.
